Sex and The City may as well be called ‘Bags and The City’ because the sitcom popularised some of the most iconic designer clothes and accessories. In fact, prior to Sex and The City, designer bags and shoes did not have the same cult following it has today.
To celebrate the Sex and The City reboot, we’re looking back at some of the most iconic designer bags from the original series.
The Fendi Baguette
Carrie’s famous Fendi Baguette is often regarded as the first designer 'It Bag'.
The Baguette quickly received good reviews, so much so that the show’s stylist, Rebecca Weinberg admitted, “In that moment, we were literally creating outfits around the Fendi bag.” What’s more, Fendi is the first high fashion brand to lend items to Sex and The City. This is why you may have seen a lot of Fendi items in the sitcom, especially variations of the iconic Fendi Baguette bag.
The Hermès Birkin
Samantha: “Look at that one, isn’t it adorable?”
Carrie: “Which one?”
Samantha: “The red one in the middle. I love it!”
Carrie: “The Birkin bag? Really? That’s not even your style”
Samantha: “Oh honey it’s not so much the style, it’s what carrying it means”
Carrie: “It means you’re out four thousand bucks”
Samantha: “Exactly. When I’m tooling around town with that bag, I’ll know I’ve made it.”
In this episode, Samantha tries to buy a 35cm Rouge Vif Clemence leather Birkin with Gold hardware for $4,000 (a steal, today Birkin bags are worth much, much more). However, the salesman informs her that the bag has a 5-year waiting list. This is still true today, the competition to get a Birkin is just as fierce.
However, Samantha eventually gets her way. In fact, the Sex and The City women can be spotted with numerous Hermès bags, including exotic (read: expensive) leather bags. And even though the episode was aired in 2002, the Hermès Birkin are one of those items that increase in value over time as they’re hotter than ever today.
But Samantha is right, it’s not about the style, when you own a Hermès Birkin bag, you know you’ve made it in life.
Today, the Christian Dior Saddle bag is one of the current hottest designer bags, you’ll often find them on the arm of models and fashion influencers on Instagram. It was first made popular by Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and The City. In season 3, episode 5, Carrie wore a pink-and-white patterned Dior Saddle bag on a date with Aidan. This episode automatically established the bag’s ‘it’ status and today we still love it more than ever.
The Gucci Belt Bag
Carrie Bradshaw, ever the trendsetter. In season 4, we saw her walk into a bar with a crop top and a Gucci GG monogram belt bag. This item was actually a men’s designer bag but Carrie always makes it work. Today, celebrities and fashionistas are still strutting designer belt bags but we all know who started the trend.
The Christian Dior Jacquard Clutch
The Dior Jacquard clutch bag was from the scene Carrie runs to get the taxi because she’s late for a Wall Street event. Although we all went mad for the stunning Dior monogram, the exact brown print no longer exists, unfortunately. However, you may be able to find it on the pre-owned luxury as well as other vintage jewels that are no longer available in-store.
