In fact, he studied human anatomy until he mastered the science of interaction between the bones and tendons of the foot when one walks. Salvatore Ferragamo often experimented with different materials and shapes of shoes. In fact, he invented the wedge heel!
When Italy suffered from closed trade in the 1940s, Ferragamo used cellophane, bark and cork in his shoe designs. The most famous of these designs is the Rainbow heel - a bulbous, multicoloured platform sandal originally created for Judy Garland in 1938.
Although Ferragamo shoes cost a bit more than the average ‘no-name’ pair, they’ll definitely last much longer. Poor quality footwear may last a year or two at most but Ferragamos can certainly last a lifetime if cared for correctly, making them more affordable, if not cheaper in the end.
