Clean Your Fountain Pen

It’s important to clean your fountain pen regularly. So, when the exterior gets dirty with fingerprints, dirt, or grime, simply wipe it down with a soft cloth. For tougher dirt, use water and gentle soap if necessary, but harsh cleaners are out of the question.

To clean the interior of a fountain pen, gently run the tip and cartridge under cold water–but avoid flushing the pen's body under water. Thereafter, dry the nib and the feeder with a clean cloth.

Use The Right Ink

When refilling your pen, try using ink specifically made for fountain pens, and if you can buy the ink from the same brand, even better! In fact, buying refills from Montblanc and Cartier, for example, is actually quite affordable. Using poor or expired ink can clog up your pen because of its high-solid content.

Make Use of Your Fountain Pen

The more you use your fountain pen, the more it becomes accustomed to your hand and writing style. That’s why sharing your pen (especially those who are opposite-handed) can change the nib shape.

Treat The Nib With Care

When writing, avoid using too much pressure as it may damage the nib of the fountain pen. In fact, a luxury pen glides smoothly across the paper, so there's no need to apply extra pressure anyway.

If you use your pen frequently, remember to replace the nib timeously so that it doesn’t damage the rest of your pen.

Changing Ink

Mixing ink from different brands or mixing different colours can react negatively with each other which can also lead to clogging your pen. So, try to use the same ink brands and colours consistently–otherwise you can try to clean it thoroughly before and after the ink runs out.

Storing Your Fountain Pen

If you plan not to use your fountain pen for a long period of time, decant it by removing the cartridge, flush out the remaining ink and store it vertically with its nib pointing up. This ensures that no ink becomes clogged inside the barrel

You can also store your fountain pen in a clean casing, or the original packaging, to ensure it’s protected.
