Even though it’s been over 2 decades since her passing, Lady Di is still known as fashion royalty. Her wardrobe is just as relevant as it was back in the day. In fact, earlier this month Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, released a reimagined version of one of her favourite handbags, dubbed as the ‘Diana bag’.
Join us as we take a closer look at the new and improved Gucci Diana bag.
Following the likes of Christian Dior’s with their ‘Lady Dior’ handbag, Salvatore Ferragamo's ‘Lady D’ and Tod’s ‘D’ bag, Alessandro Michele has now released a Gucci ‘Diana bag'.
In his recently revealed ‘Beloved’ campaign, Michele reinvents some of the House’s most iconic handbags including the Jackie 1961 bag (renamed in tribute to Jackie Kennedy, who was often spotted with her G1244 handbag), Gucci Horsebit 1955 and of course the classic bamboo collection that was renamed in honour of Princess Diana.
Michele states, “We decided to show the concept of ‘beloved’ in an ironic way in the campaign, being inspired by the fact that bags are the protagonists in my life and in the lives of many other people”.
The Diana bag still has the original bamboo handles and tote structure. However, Michele’s 2021 version features modern elements, such as funky neon removable belts fastened around the bamboo handles. These vibrant straps come in interchangeable neon colours which can be customised with initials and star symbols for added personalisation.
The tote is also available in stunning shades such as black, pastel pink, ivory, python leather and more. What’s more, additional belts can be purchased for further customisation.
You can now purchase the Diana bag in three sizes. MINI costs ZAR 39,000, SMALL is ZAR 45,000 and MEDIUM is currently listed on Gucci’s online store for around ZAR 58,000.
Although it's only been a week, celebrities have taken to the streets strutting in the glamorous handbag. Some of these celebrities include Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller, Jodie Turner-Smith and more.
We’ve seen in the past that designer handbags with rich histories can be transformative for the fashion industry. Take Gucci’s ‘Fifties Constance’ that was renamed to the ‘Jackie’ bag after she was regularly photographed with it. Another example is the Hermès ‘sac à dépêches’ that was renamed to the ‘Kelly’ after Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, used the tote to hide her pregnancy from the paparazzi. These bags are not just highly coveted status symbols, but truly valuable investment pieces.
