It’s Not A Collaboration

Although the word is thrown around, the ‘Fendace’ collection isn’t quite a collaboration. Leaders of their respective designer brands, Donatella Versace and Kim Jones swapped seats to create a collection for each other’s labels. Both collections were launched during a pre-fall 2022 joint fashion show.

“It’s a swap rather than a collaboration, and most of all, it is done out of friendship,” explains Kim Jones, Fendi couture and womenswear artistic director. “It is the beauty of togetherness after time apart and a celebration of women who have inspired me so much.”

What’s Different About Fendace?

Unlike The Hacker Project from Gucci and Balenciaga, coming from two houses that share the same parent company, or Prada where co-designers Miuccia and Raf Simons share equal billing at one label, what makes this ‘swap’ even more unusual is that Fendi is owned by LVMH whilst Versace belongs to Tapestry.

This historic cooperation between two iconic Italian houses, was, said Donatella, “something that’s never been done before”

Who Attended The Fashion Show?

The event was adorned by stars–including supermodels strutting the luxurious garb. Kim Jones’s collection included safety-pinned gowns, gold baroque prints and mini dresses worn by Kate Moss, Amber Valetta, Shalom Harlow, Adut Akech, and Precious Lee, amongst others.

While Donatella sent out Gigi Hadid, Naomi Campbell, and Emily Ratajkowski in pastel chainmail mini dresses with double FF logos, FF print trench coats with matching miniskirts and knee boots, a micro chainmail version of the Baguette and Peekaboos lined with Versace’s signature baroque print.

How Does The Collection Look Like?

The collections feature ready-to-wear, handbags, footwear, and accessories presented in a “role and brand code exchange.” Fendi’s double F logo is coupled with Versace’s Baroque pattern, the Fendi baguette is paired with a Versace Medusa insignia, and co-branded graphic designs can be seen on shirts and hoodies. It’s clear that neither collection was targeted toward minimalists!

“The campaign captures the same sense of friendship and energy we had when we were designing the collection,” Donatella Versace said in a statement. “Kim is a visionary designer and innovator. To me, Fendace will always mean love.”
