It was here where he became starstruck by the jet setters from all over the world, carrying their luggage in and out of the hotel. As it was his family trade, Guccio mulled over the idea of providing these upper-class folk with fine Italian leather luggage. He then voyaged back home to work for an Italian leather goods company called Franzi. That is until he broke off to start his very own company years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Start of Guccio\u2019s Very Own Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/The-first-Gucci-store.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"71365\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/The-first-Gucci-store.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/?attachment_id=71365\" class=\"wp-image-71365\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1921, Guccio founded the House of Gucci on Via della Vigna Nuova in Florence, Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The business started as a small family business that mainly sold <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/how-to-authenticate-gucci-bags-and-shoes\/\">authentic leather goods and travel <\/a><\/span>gear. However, as business picked up and word spread worldwide about the famous Italian leather goods company, Guccio branched out to equestrian equipment too. He also employed his sons, Aldo, Vasco and Rodolfo to hold the reins down while the business boomed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leather Losses Turn Into Wins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Gucci-monogram.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"71367\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Gucci-monogram.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/?attachment_id=71367\" class=\"wp-image-71367\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During, the 1930s, leather was in short supply due to the League of Nations embargo against Italy. The Gucci\u2019s were forced to explore other available textiles, which led to the creation of the iconic Gucci GG interlocking diamond pattern canvas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Creative Inventions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Gucci-bamboo-saddle.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"71368\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Gucci-bamboo-saddle.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/?attachment_id=71368\" class=\"wp-image-71368\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The iconic Bamboo Bag was born under similar circumstances in 1947; Gucci artisans were scrambling to find materials towards the end of World War II and discovered that they could use Japanese bamboo to craft unique bag handles. Created with a unique and patented method, these burnished bamboo handles (which are saddle-shaped) became synonymous with the brand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As leather and other materials became more abundant, the Gucci sons experimented with more textiles.&nbsp;Aldo Gucci created the first pigskin bag which later became a brand staple and by 1951, the famous green-red-green stripe detail became popular amongst their customers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the business\u2019s success, Rodolfo Gucci was able to open the third store on Via Condotti, Milan, in 1951, before <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/where-to-find-gucci-in-south-africa\/\">expanding outside of the nation.&nbsp;<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Italy to New York<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-6 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/New-York-store.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"71369\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/New-York-store.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/?attachment_id=71369\" class=\"wp-image-71369\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In his lifetime, Guccio wanted to keep the business within his home country. The theme of the runway was the classic Flora pattern, needless to say, it was a huge success. However, with this came a lot of rivalry within the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Family Feud Affects Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-9 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Maurizio.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"71372\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Maurizio.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/?attachment_id=71372\" class=\"wp-image-71372\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, Guccio\u2019s grandchildren were older and were also working for the company. However, in the 1980s, the famous family constantly fought for control of the company. Eventually, Rodolfo\u2019s son, Maurizio pushed his family out and took over the family business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The New &amp; Improved Gucci Team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-10 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Richard-Lambertson-and-Tom-Ford.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"71373\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Richard-Lambertson-and-Tom-Ford.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/?attachment_id=71373\" class=\"wp-image-71373\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Maurizio soon brought bankruptcy to the company. And so, in 1989, Investcorp purchased half of the brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first big change in Gucci\u2019s revamp was Dawn Mello being assigned as the very first creative director along with a whole new team including Richard Lambertson as design director, Neil Barrett designing menswear and Tom Ford as the designer of the women\u2019s ready-to-wear collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tom Ford\u2019s Reign<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-11 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Tom-Ford-1994-runway.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"71374\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Tom-Ford-1994-runway.jpeg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/?attachment_id=71374\" class=\"wp-image-71374\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/product-category\/brands+tom-ford\/\">Tom Ford<\/a><\/span> worked his way up and in 1994 he became the brand\u2019s creative director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following year, Maurizio Gucci sold the other half of his shares to Investcorp and in the same year was murdered by his wife.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many idealise Tom Ford for his contribution to the brand&#8217;s makeover when he introduced hypersexualisation on the fashion scene. At this time, the concept was unheard of and never before seen on any other runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ford\u2019s collection of white cutout jersey dresses fastened with abstract horse-bit belts sets the sleek, sexy, modern style that became Gucci\u2019s signature look of the 90s and subsequently attracted attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LVMH\u2019s Stakes Into Gucci<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-12 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Frida-Giannini.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"71376\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Frida-Giannini.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/?attachment_id=71376\" class=\"wp-image-71376\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 2000s, Fendi&#8217;s former handbag designer, Frida Giannini joined the accessories department, John Ray joined the men\u2019s wear department and Alessandra Facchinetti joined the womenswear department.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the decade, LVMH slowly took over the company and investor Fran\u00e7ois Pinault (now known as Kering), became the major stakeholder and still is till this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2004, Tom Ford and CEO Domenico De Sole left the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The New Styling Era<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-13 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/gucci-diano-flora-featured-image.gif\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"71377\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/gucci-diano-flora-featured-image.gif\" data-link=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/?attachment_id=71377\" class=\"wp-image-71377\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When Giannini became the brand\u2019s creative director in 2006, she abandoned Ford\u2019s overt sexual style and GG logo for the rejuvenated Flora pattern and other distinct house symbols into her designs, which later proved successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alessandro Michele\u2019s Rise To The Top<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-14 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Alessandro-Michele-collections.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"71378\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Alessandro-Michele-collections.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/?attachment_id=71378\" class=\"wp-image-71378\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once Giannini moved out of the company, Michele quickly rose to the top in 2015, after working for the brand for over 12 years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michele quickly took to the role by scrapping Giannini\u2019s line and redesigning an entirely new menswear collection in just 5 days before exhibiting it on the Fall\/Winter 2015 runway. A month later, he launched his first womenswear collection on the Milan runway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marco Bizzarri was also brought in as the new president and CEO, following Di Marco\u2019s exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gucci Today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-15 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/The-history-and-evolution-luxury.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"71379\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/The-history-and-evolution-luxury.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/?attachment_id=71379\" class=\"wp-image-71379\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In only 4 years, Alessandro Michele has turned the Gucci empire inside out. Michele filled the high fashion runway into a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/7-weird-wonderful-gucci-accessories\/\">child-like fantasy with bees, hearts, bows, brooches, flowers, ruffles, pop culture references and other maximalist designs and symbols.<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Michele tries to stay true to Gucci\u2019s origins while still evolving with the times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, Gucci pledged to promote gender equality, diversity, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/luxity.co.za\/5-tips-to-shop-sustainably\/\">become sustainable <\/a><\/span>and provide a caring working environment, contributing to positive social impacts, supporting transformation all while continuing craftsmanship traditions.
