Herm\u00e8s history begins nearly 2 centuries ago! Since 1837, Herm\u00e8s<\/a> has cultivated collection after collection of French-inspired designer beauties! For 183 years, they have mastered the high-fashion industry. Their consistently high-end craftsmanship spares no expense, and their product quality<\/a> and price tags reflect this<\/a>! But how did Herm\u00e8s become one of the biggest names in luxury fashion? Well, they mastered the world of designer and perfected their luxury handbags over hundreds of years!<\/p>\n

Heritage Behind Herm\u00e8s History<\/h2>\n

The Story Behind The Brand Name Herm\u00e8s<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The origin story behind one of the biggest luxury brand names is an interesting one. Herm\u00e8s, is actually the last name of the designer label\u2019s founder.<\/p>\n

But the name also comes from Greek mythology, it was the name of the Greek god of messengers and commerce.<\/p>\n

Not So Humble Beginnings<\/strong><\/h3>\n

It may come as a surprise, but the Herm\u00e8s fashion house has a history that extends far beyond handbags that\u00a0have us doing double takes every time we think we’ve spotted one!<\/p>\n

Herm\u00e8s originally became famous in the early 1800’s for their high-end harnesses and saddles.\u00a0Which were custom-crafted for the European royals and the upper-class elite.<\/p>\n

The Herm\u00e8s horse and carriage logo remains emblematic of the brand’s cultured foundation.<\/p>\n

Long Line of Herm\u00e8s Heirs & Heiresses<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The brand name began with Thierry Herm\u00e8s, who opened the first workshop in 1837. Herm\u00e8s was then passed onto his son Charles-\u00c9mile Herm\u00e8s and then Charles\u2019 sons Adolphe and \u00c9mile-Maurice.<\/p>\n

Robert Dumas, the son-in-law of \u00c9mile-Maurice took over Herm\u00e8s after \u00c9mile\u2019s death. Robert was the first person in charge of Herm\u00e8s who was not a direct descendant of\u00a0Thierry Herm\u00e8s. He was only tied to the Herm\u00e8s brand and family through marriage.<\/p>\n

Once Robert took on the top position, he felt it was\u00a0time to incorporate the Herm\u00e8s name into his surname, and ever since he was Dumas-Herm\u00e8s.<\/p>\n

Pierre Alexis Dumas, the current artistic director, and Axel Dumas, the CEO, are 6th<\/sup>\u00a0generation descendants of the founder of Herm\u00e8s. They were not given their seats by default.<\/p>\n

They \u201cstarted from the bottom\u201d and had to prove their worth to reach the top, just like everyone else.<\/p>\n

History of Herm\u00e8s<\/h1>\n

Herm\u00e8s History:\u00a01837 – 1900<\/h3>\n

1837 <\/strong>–\u00a0Thierry Herm\u00e8s established Herm\u00e8s, originally as a harness workshop, serving European noblemen.<\/p>\n

1855 <\/strong>–\u00a0The high quality harnesses and bridles crafted by Herm\u00e8s gained recognition, winning many awards including the First Class Medal of the Exposition of Paris.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

1878 <\/strong>–\u00a0Thierry Herm\u00e8s passed away.<\/p>\n

1880 <\/strong>–\u00a0Herm\u00e8s\u2019s son, Charles-Emile Herm\u00e8s, took over his father\u2019s workshop and moved the store to 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore, where it still stands to this day. He started focusing on international retail sales catering to the elite of Europe, Russia, North Africa, Asia, and the Americas.<\/p>\n

Herm\u00e8s History: 1900 –\u00a01950<\/h3>\n

1902 <\/strong>–\u00a0Charles-Emile retired, leaving the business to his sons, Adolphe and Emile-Maurice.<\/p>\n

1914 <\/strong>–\u00a0Emile-Maurice began equipping the czars of Russia. Due to this, Emile-Maurice gained exclusive rights to the use of the zipper on leather goods and clothing. He became the first person in France to introduce the zipper.<\/p>\n

1922 <\/strong>–\u00a0The first leather handbags were created after Emile-Maurice\u2019s wife complained that she was not able to find a handbag that she truly loved. The bag was a smaller version of the \u2018Haut a Courroies\u2019 and was personally designed by Emile-Maurice. Talk about couple goals!<\/p>\n

1924 <\/strong>–\u00a0Herm\u00e8s established its presence in the USA and opened two new stores in France.<\/p>\n

1929 <\/strong>–\u00a0Herm\u00e8s introduced the first women\u2019s haute couture apparel collection.<\/p>\n

1935 <\/strong>–\u00a0Herm\u00e8s launched one of their most recognisable and iconic handbags, the Sac a depeches bag, which would later become known as the Kelly bag.<\/p>\n

1937 <\/strong>–\u00a0Herm\u00e8s introduced the silk scarf, which instantly became a huge hit with celebrities, like Jacqueline Kennedy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Herm\u00e8s History: 1950 –\u00a02000<\/h3>\n

1951 <\/strong>–\u00a0Emile-Maurice Herm\u00e8s passed away and Robert Dumas Herm\u00e8s, husband of Jacqueline Herm\u00e8s, took over the company. With the help of Jean Rene Guerrand, husband of Aline Herm\u00e8s. Both Jacqueline and Aline\u00a0were great-granddaughters of Thierry Hermes.<\/p>\n

Early 1950s <\/strong>–\u00a0Herm\u00e8s began to use their legendary caliche logo. At this time Hermes also began using their iconic orange boxes.<\/p>\n

1956 <\/strong>–\u00a0A photograph of Grace Kelly, the Hollywood actress who became a Monaco Princess, carrying a Hermes Sac a Depeches to hide her pregnant belly \u201cgraced\u201d the front cover of Life Magazine. Suddenly women were flooding Herm\u00e8s stores asking for the \u2018Kelly Bag\u2019. In response Herm\u00e8s renamed the Sac a Depaches as the Kelly.<\/p>\n

1978 <\/strong>–\u00a0Great-great-great-grandson of Thierry Herm\u00e8s, Jean Louis Dumas, took over the company and purchased the building next to 24 Rue Faubourg Saint-Honore, expanding their flagship in Paris.<\/p>\n

1981 <\/strong>–\u00a0The iconic Birkin bag was officially introduced, named after British actress Jane Birkin.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Herm\u00e8s History: 2000 – Today<\/h3>\n

2003 <\/strong>–\u00a0Jean Louis Dumas retired and Patrick Thomas became the new head of Herm\u00e8s.<\/p>\n

2007 <\/strong>\u2013\u00a0Herm\u00e8s purchased 28 Rue Faubourg Saint-Honore, and once again expanded its flagship store in Paris.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

2012 <\/strong>–\u00a0Sixth generation Herm\u00e8s family member, Axel Dumas, became CEO of Herm\u00e8s and still remains in this position today.<\/p>\n
