10 Fun Facts About Moschino

Moschino is an eccentric and Avante-Garde luxury brand heavily influenced by pop culture. The Italian brand is responsible for some of the most jaw-dropping runways which include Trash, McDonald’s and Barbie-inspired ready-to-wear collections. Moschino is anything but boring, so keep reading for some fun facts about this highly coveted designer brand.

How To Pronounce ‘Moschino’

Most English-speakers pronounce the Italian house as ‘mo-shee-no’ or ‘muh-shee-no’ but that’s actually wrong! The correct pronunciation is ‘mo-skee-no’.

Moschino Is Always Pushing The Envelope

Current creative director, Jeremy Scott, is always coming up with innovative products that are often quirky and ironic. One of his most famous fragrances is the iconic ‘Fresh couture’ perfume, which is designed to look like a household cleaning product. But don’t worry, this eau de toilette definitely does not smell like it belongs in a toilet!

Addiction To Fashion

Their Spring 2017 ready-to-wear collection produced a lot of controversy and negative critics as it focused on medicine. This collection displayed a list of medicine-related items, such as a postman bag that resembled a giant pill bottle and other items with capsule pill designs. One of the most contentious items was the clutch bag that looked like a giant tablet blister pack.

Although controversial, the collection’s slogan was ‘Just say Moschino’ (emphasis on the ‘no’). Hence, it was an anti-drug campaign to encourage people to say no to drugs. But the amount of negative press and critics forced the brand to discontinue the majority of the items in stores.

Trashy Fashion

We’ve already established that the brand has a quirky sense of humour, but did you know that Moschino can literally turn trash into high fashion.

In 2017 Moschino released a ‘Cardboard Couture’ collection, inspired by upcycling cardboard packaging. The runway was made out of deconstructed cardboard boxes and held together with duct tape while the collection looked like items you’d likely find in a bin. Some of the most memorable looks include a bubble wrap ensemble, a trash bag minidress, a shower curtain dress, an outfit made of old Moschino adverts, a bike wheel hat, a hat box hat (yes, you read that right) and a lot more garbage-inspired looks.

Moschino Loves Candy Crush

Moschino created a collection for the 5th anniversary of Candy Crush Saga – yes, the game! This collection consisted of bathing suits, bags, phone cases.

He said in a statement, “As someone who is inspired by pop culture, it was only a matter of time ’til I’d play with the iconography of Candy Crush.” He continued, “The only thing I love more than playing the game is wearing it!”

Moschino Hotel

Moschino has a designer hotel in Milan, Italy. The fashion house collaborated with Stefano Ugolini (one of the best hotel designers in the world).

Although the look of the outside isn’t anything special, the interior design is straight out of a fairytale – which is on-brand for Moschino. This magical hotel will transform you into a fantasy world. There are 65 hotel rooms and every single one of them tells a different story. Just as the website says, entering the Maison Moschino is like falling down the rabbit hole: after a while, you come to expect the unexpected – like in Alice in Wonderland!

Some of these magical designs include a teacup table, tutu lamp, ceiling origami and a bed wearing ball-dress.

Designer Furniture

In 2017, Moschino collaborated with Gothram, a furniture manufacturer. But by now, you should know that Moschino will not do anything boring. Their furniture line consisted of a biker jacket shaped cabinet (inspired by Moschino’s iconic biker bag), a red lip-shaped couch with a golden zipper and high heels (one being a bookshelf and the other is an ottoman seat).

Designer Barbie

The brand also collaborated with a toy company, Mattel, to create a designer Barbie collection. One of the doll collections even features Barbie in a black velvet dress with graffiti while Ken wears a matching multicoloured suit. This set is a recreation of Jeremy Scott and Stella Maxwell’s ensembles for the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.

Moschino also had a Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear Collection that’s completely inspired by Barbie. “Like every girl and gay boy, I loved Barbie,” Scott said backstage afterwards, sporting a “Moschino for Ages 5 and Over” T-shirt. “It’s hard not to; she’s practically perfect,” he went on. “She’s a good big sister, she’s had every job in the world, worn every outfit. And it’s just joyful. Her and I share the same things: We just want to bring joy to people.”

Biker Helmets

Over the years, Moschino has continuously drawn inspiration from the biker industry. In 2007, they presented their first collection of Moschino helmets in collaboration with Max Helmets. This line includes black, white, silver and gold helmets with the recognisable Moschino logo.

Moschino’s Philosophy

Jeremy Scott believes that fashion shouldn’t be taken seriously – it should be fun!

“There are so many serious things in the world, I just choose not to be one of them. Fashion is an ultimate luxury – I mean, you don’t need it – so it should bring you pleasure and make you happy.” Says the creative director, “I don’t like the idea of people revering it. Fashion should have a transgressive nature; it can make you feel like someone else, give you heightened emotion. It should bring you joy and uplift you.”
