TAG Heuer is one of the world’s leading luxury watch brands with a strong history of innovation, deep connections with sports timing and automobile racing. Keep reading for all the reasons why we love TAG Heuer
luxury watches.
1. Record-Breaking Speed Chronographs
TAG Heuer was founded in 1860 by Edouard Heuer and quickly build a reputation for quality workmanship, precision timekeeping and other technical innovations. By the 1880s, the company became a specialist in the field of timing sporting events.
In 1933, the brand launched the Autavia, the very first dashboard stopwatch for race cars. The affinity with precision timekeeping in sports and with automobile racing continues to this day.
2. Affordable Luxury Watches
TAG Heuer can easily compete with the standard of quality and style allure of
classic Rolex watches. However, they are often more affordable than higher luxury watch brands like
Rolex. Hence, TAG Heuer is the perfect
start to your luxury watch collection.
3. Fast & Accurate Luxury Watches
Another technical achievement started when Charles-Auguste Heuer launched the original ‘Mikrograph’ in 1916. It was the first mechanical stopwatch able to measure 1/100th of a second.
To accomplish this, the movement’s rate was 360,000 Vph. Hence, its ten times faster than the 36,000 vph chronographs that we usually categorise as ‘fast’. The original Mikrograph revolutionized sports timekeeping and served as the official stopwatch for the 1920 Olympics!
4. The Carrera Collection is a Must-Have For All Collectors
TAG Heuer’s high-end models are stronger associated with automobile racing. In fact, the ‘Carrera’ collection is one of the best luxury motorsport watches in the world!
It is said that Jack Heuer claimed the name after taking control of the company from his uncle. Furthermore, the name hails from the Carrera Panamericana, a dangerous race run on public roads in Mexico from 1950 to 1954. Apparently, Jack Heuer wanted to create a watch for race car drivers that were legible and tough enough to withstand the vibrations drivers experience during a fast race.
Today, the TAG Heuer Carrera watch has now achieved cult status.
5. TAG Heuer: The First Swiss Watch in Space
In 1962, John Glenn boarded the Mercury ‘Friendship 7’ spaceship and successfully managed to orbit Earth 3 times wearing a Heuer 2915A stopwatch on his wrist - on top of his spacesuit, held in place by a custom-made elastic strap. The purpose of the watch was to be a mission back-up timer. Today, the watch is kept at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Talk about a watch that's out of this world! ?
6. The First Water-Resistant Automatic Chronograph
The very first water-resistant automatic chronograph was created by TAG Heuer. Development of the chronograph started in 1965 but was released in Basel in 1969. It took a total of 4 years for the company to craft a watch that could both function as a display and a timer because if the company is ever known for anything other than its association with sports, it’s about the quality of their chronographs!
